News from the SIOPE Nursing Working Group

29/01/2024

As we enter the new year of 2024, we are delighted to provide a brief overview of our activities in the past year.

The SIOPE Nursing Working Group has continued to grow by welcoming new members enthusiastic about contributing to our educational and research initiatives.

Within the past year, we have managed to successfully establish three subgroups, dedicated to Nutrition, Palliative Care (PC), and Nursing Research.

  • The Nutrition subgroup is committed to educating and raising awareness about nutrition for cancer and bone marrow transplant patients. In pursuit of this goal, we have scheduled two webinars taking place in February and March 2024. The webinars will address the crucial question, "Why is nutrition important?"
  • Our focus on Palliative Care (PC) recognizes its profound impact on the quality of life and symptom management for children with cancer and their families. The PC nursing working subgroup is determined to enhance paediatric palliative care delivered by oncology nurses. To achieve a multidisciplinary perspective, we collaborate with the SIOPE Palliative Care Working Group. One of the first actions taken by the subgroup was a survey across European countries to understand the current state of oncology nurses' education and training on paediatric PC. The collected data is currently under analysis, and in the coming months, we plan to offer targeted webinars on paediatric PC for oncology nurses.
  • The last subgroup dedicated to Nursing Research will start soon. All academic nurse researchers are welcome to participate in the meetings of this subgroup. The purpose of this Nursing Research subgroup is to get to know other researchers, to share knowledge and experience, to learn from each other, and possibly collaborate on future research.  The first meeting is scheduled on February 26th from 16.00-17.30 and will be held online. In collaboration with SIOP, the SIOPE Nursing Working Group is actively contributing in reviewing and developing initiatives related to Supportive Care. Earlier this year, a joint session between EONS and SIOPE took place during the ESMO/EONS meeting in Madrid, with a particular focus on Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) patients and their transition in care.

Last but not least, we're deeply engaged in organizing the Nursing program for SIOP Europe Annual Meeting in Milan 2024. Stay tuned for more updates and exciting developments in our commitment to advancing paediatric oncology nursing!
