SIOP Europe Educational Programme 

SIOP Europe Annual Meeting  

The SIOP Europe Educational Steering Committee is organising 4 exciting educational sessions during the 6th SIOP Europe Annual Meeting taking place 12-16 May 2025 in Budapest, Hungary. 

Topics include:  

·      Monday: Fungal infections in paediatric oncology: Primary prophylaxis, therapy and new drugs: Thomas Lehrnbecher 

·      Tuesday: Acute pancreatitis, thromboembolism and osteonecrosis in children with ALL: what is the evidence for daily routine: Kjeld Schmiegelow 

·      Thursday: Symptom control in paediatric cancer patients: Ana Lacerda 

·      Friday: Solid tumors in neonates and infants: differential diagnoses and diagnostic/therapeutic approaches: Gianni Bisogno,Rutger Knops, and Gayané Sarian

 

Alumni of the 1st SIOP Europe Course in Paediatric Oncology and of the 1st SIOP Europe Student Summer School are invited to attend a dedicated session at the SIOP Europe Annual Meeting on Monday 12 May, from 10.30-12.30.  

 

SIOPE Course alumni will present ongoing progress on their final assignments, focusing on the most common chosen topic. The goal is to establish the official SIOP Europe guidelines, under supervision of Course trainers who are experts in the field. The joint SIOP Europe Course and Student Summer School Alumni session offer a great chance for the youngest members, who see their future in paediatric haematology and oncology, to connect with their immediate advisors.

Young SIOPE and ERN PaedCan Webinars – Upcoming Webinars 

The Young SIOPE and ERN PaedCan Interactive Webinar Series on Most Challenging cases in Paediatric Oncology has been a huge success since it started in 2021! In 2025, 7 challenging clinical cases were chosen for interactive webinars, in which a young oncologist presents the case, followed by live discussion with an invited expert, moderated by a member of the steering committee. 

The next webinar in the series will be on “Dilemmas in a Patient with Bloom Syndrome and Synchronously Developed Medulloblastoma and Wilms Tumour” on 28 May 2025, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM (CET).

Virtual Courses 

The SIOP Europe Palliative Care Working Group, together with Young SIOPE organised a course on “Embracing Palliative Care in Paediatric Oncology from the Diagnosis Onwards” on 14-15 March 2025.  

Participants met and discussed all aspects of palliative care during this two-day course, with intensive sessions on ethics, sedation, pain and other symptoms, spirituality and cultural differences, advanced care planning, psychosocial support and other topics.

Stay tuned for information about a second virtual course taking place in autumn 2025 on Causes and epidemiology of childhood cancer - the role of genetic predisposition and environment.  

Thanks to the importance of and ongoing interest in this topic, a second edition of the previously successful course will take place in mid-November 2025, with a refreshed program, lecturers and trainers. Alumni of the 1st SIOPE Course are involved in the organisation and serve as trainers in the interactive parts of this course.  

 

ESID EHA SIOPE Focused Symposium 2025 

Mark your calendar for a transformative gathering at the ESID-EHA-SIOPE Focused Symposium 2025, taking place in Vienna, 18-20 November 2025. The symposium will be a milestone event, bringing together immunologists, haematologists, and paediatric oncologists for an immersive experience centered on “The Interplay of Immunology & Haematology.” 

This symposium marks a new era of collaboration among our specialties, with 3 societies coming together for 1 mission: uniting our expertise across these vital fields to elevate patient care and outcomes.

ESO-SIOPE Collaboration 

ESO and SIOP Europe Joint Fellowship 

ESO and SIOP Europe's joint Fellowship Programme is for young paediatric haematologists and oncologists to advance their clinical experience at renowned centres across Europe.  

The programme supports young and promising paediatric oncologists in their education and career development in cancer care. The programme gives oncologists of the future the opportunity to spend 3 to 6 months at a Centre of Excellence in Europe.  

In 2025, two fellows were selected (and a third may be confirmed shortly):  

Kristina Petrova will start her fellowship at the end of March at the Princess Maxima Center in the Netherlands, and Khrystyna Zapotochna will be a fellow at the Royal Marsden in the UK.

2026 ESO-SIOPE MasterClass in Paediatric Oncology 

The next ESO-SIOPE Masterclass in Paediatric Oncology will be held in 2026 (dates to be confirmed). This Masterclass takes place every two years. The CME accredited clinically oriented educational program is designed for young paediatric oncologists, who wish to improve their skills in clinical management of common childhood tumours and leukemia and lymphoma.  

This Masterclass offers a unique learning experience, providing practice-oriented training and the teaching sessions will focus on the application of the most recent research findings to clinical practice. Attendance is by application only and successful applicants are granted free registration.

ESO-SIOP Europe e-Learning pathways covering topics in paediatric oncology. Each 45-minute e-Session is presented by leading oncology experts. Recordings remain freely available on demand for further visits here. In 2025, two sessions will be added on cancer predisposition and prevention, and on post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders. A recent session on “infant ALL” has been added to the already existing collection of presentations.
