While preparing the Nursing Programme for the SIOPE Annual Meeting in Milan, the SIOPE Nursing Working Group has also conducted two webinars on Nutrition. The first webinar attracted 131 registered attendees, and the second webinar had 93 attendees.
The Nutrition in Childhood Cancer – The What, When and How, (Part 1) A Webinar led by Mary – Foo Caballero, Matron and Lead Cancer Nurse at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, and member of the Nutrition Nursing Group
The webinar featured excellent speakers from across Europe who highlighted on:
- Why nutrition is important in childhood cancer.
- Complications of cancer treatment affecting nutrition.
- Screening and assessment considerations.
- Overview of interventions.
Almost 70% of the attendees agree on the good organization.
Some comments in the evaluation form that have reflected the relevance of these issue were:
“A great overview and really interesting research highlighting the importance of nutrition in clinical outcomes”.
The second webinar was fully dedicated to the Nutrition in Bone marrow Transplants, the importance (or not) of the neutropenic diet and the different techniques of approaching good nutrition and care. The speakers defined:
- Food restrictions in BMT - time for a new approach? Evidence, myth, and practice
- Enteral nutrition support: nasogastric tubes and PEG in BMT
- Graft vs Host Disease of the gut: nutrition and diet
- Enteral nutrition vs parenteral nutrition in BMT
- Nutrition in CYP BMT: nursing considerations
Comments from the audience were:
“Really interesting to hear the choices given at different centres”.
“Extremely interesting to see data regarding peg and ng tube usage”.
This feedback will help us to continue working with the same enthusiasm and consider future research on these issues.

Lastly, the SIOPE Nursing Working Group participated in the World Health Worker Week campaign that took place from 7-13 of April 2024.
