The European Reference Network on Paediatric Cancer (ERN PaedCan)

The European Reference Network on Paediatric Cancer (ERN PaedCan) aims help to increase childhood cancer survival and quality of life in the long term by fostering cooperation, research, training and knowledge sharing to end professional isolation, with the ultimate goal of reducing current inequalities in childhood cancer survival and healthcare capabilities across Europe.

Almost 90 participants took part in the 3rd ERN PaedCan General Assembly, which was held on 31 January 2019 – 1 February 2019 in Brussels. The discussions were interactive and informative, and the meeting provided an update on the project performance.  It was interesting and beneficial to perceive the outlooks from various countries as well as the parents/patients/survivors perspectives. 

The integration of widening countries included presentations on the current situation at the national level from these countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Discussions followed on the status quo of the European Clinical Trial Groups partnerships with widening countries (WIC) including presentations on ALL – BFM Strategy, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Renal Tumour Study Group, Soft Tissue Sarcoma, Osteosarcoma, Ewing Tumours and Neuroblastoma (Standard Treatment recommendation & Relationships with WIC). This was followed by knowledge sharing and dissemination on E Learning (Hepatoblastoma Standard Treatment recommendation & Relationships with WIC), CPMS updates, ERN PaedCan CPMS 2019 Mission (Activities & Plans), and dissemination activities ERN PaedCan.

The last part of the meeting covered news from the PARTNER Project, updates and synergies with JARC, CCI-E updates and managing expectations for 2019, as well as a summary of common action points. Last but not least, we are also pleased to inform that SIOP Europe submitted articles over the past months to relevant media such as The Parliament Magazine, Government Gazette, Open Access Government, SciTech Europa, bringing further visibility to ERN PaedCan.
