Due to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the uncertainty caused by the apparition of several new variants in December 2021, SIOP Europe took the difficult decision to change the format of the meeting to a virtual meeting.
Despite this challenging situation, participants and meeting partners showed extreme support and this virtual edition surpassed SIOP Eurpe's expectations in terms of attendance, with over 1140 participants joining the meeting. SIOP Europe members represented 43.33% of the attendees. The remaining participants identified as international healthcare professionals, policymakers, young oncologists in training (15.6%), parent & survivor representatives (2.3%) and nurses & psychosocial professionals (1.92%). The majority of participants indicated being based in Europe (86.4%).
Multiple live scientific sessions and plenary sessions (open to all participants), operational ZOOM meetings (per invitation only), board meetings, working groups meetings and pre-recorded educational sessions were broadcasted from 23 to 25 March 2022. In total, 232 Faculty members joined the meeting. All open sessions were recorded and published on the Virtual Platform, which was open and accessible to all registered participants until 25 May 2022.
This year, the vast majority of the European Clinical Trial Groups (14/19) and all the SIOPE Groups (4/4) organised open and joint sessions during the Annual Meeting. Moreover, 3 new Groups (Paediatric Palliative Care Working Group, Nursing Working Group and Psychosocial Working Group) were launched during this meeting and organized welcome sessions to present their goals and planned activities.
