ESCALIER: Revision of the European standards of care for children with cancer
SIOPE and CCI-Europe have launched the ESCALIER project to revise the European standards of care for children with cancer, aiming to provide our community with updated, evidence-based standards.
The SIOPE Paediatric Palliative Care WG is part of the authoring team for Chapter 4, which is about Palliative Care. This is a huge step forward, as the previous document only included a very short paragraph about palliative care. The new document will include an entire chapter dedicated to palliative care, allowing us to provide with proper guidelines and recommendations, fostering early integration.
SIOP Europe Course in Paediatric Oncology
Our WG was invited to participate in Module 2 of the SIOP Europe Course in Paediatric Oncology for young oncologists, which took place in Ljubljana, between 7-10.6.2023.
Dr. Ana Lacerda delivered Palliative care 101 in paediatric oncology. This was a case-based lecture and discussion of management of chronic pain and palliative sedation. The lecture was very well-received, highlighting the importance of more training and awareness on early integration of palliative care.

In 2023, the SIOPE PPC WG published a position paper titled “Embracing paediatric palliative care in paediatric oncology from diagnosis onwards” in the Pediatric Blood and Cancer journal.
The aim is to raise awareness about the early integration of palliative care into paediatric oncology, why it is important and which challenges should be addressed.
