Gold September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month!
Did you know that:
- There are 35,000 new cases of childhood cancer in Europe each year.
- Over 6,000 children and young people are dying every year in Europe from childhood cancer.
- There are up to 20% differences in survival of children with cancer amongst European regions due to unequal access to the best standard care and research.
- Almost 500,000 survivors of childhood cancer live in Europe today, however, most of them experience adverse late effects limiting their well-being and participation in society.
During September, and throughout the year, we invite you to join us and honour children and young people with cancer, their families and caregivers, healthcare professionals, survivors, children who lost their lives, and scientists dedicated to beating childhood cancer.
By raising awareness during ‘Gold’ September – Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, you can make a real difference and help us create a brighter future for children and adolescents with cancer.
GOLD RIBBON SYMBOLISM
The gold ribbon is the universal symbol for childhood cancer and used to mobilise attention. You can show your support by wearing a gold ribbon pin or including a digital ribbon in your messages.
How to participate in our Childhood Cancer Awareness Month campaign?
Go Gold Toolkit
We are deeply proud to announce our Go-Gold Toolkit, a new initiative that will ensure easier access for our community to communicate with us. We strongly believe that this toolkit will play a crucial role in fostering more consistent and clear communication, making it easier for our community to spread awareness and make a difference.
To further engage our community, SIOP Europe has decided to make an essential toolkit available to everyone so that you can interact with us and participate in our events during this incredible month of September. This one-stop-shop has everything you need to know to interact with us during Gold September 2024.
Raising awareness in an informative way is fundamental to us. After all, information is power! With our Go-Gold Toolkit, we are not only raising awareness, but also providing all our members and users with the tools to be fully prepared for this major campaign. We want to empower our community by providing them with the materials and resources they need to easily share and engage with us during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
But why should you use them?
For example, did you learn something new about childhood cancer today? Did a particular fact or story resonate with you? Do you want to share it with your friends and family right away? Social media is the most effective and cost-effective way to spread the word. To amplify our campaign messages and reach a wider audience, we are using the hashtags #GoldSeptember and #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth.
You can find our Go-Gold toolkit with all the materials you need at this link.

Virtual Awareness Wall for Childhood Cancer
We are thrilled to launch our Virtual Awareness Wall, an innovative initiative to raise awareness of childhood cancer through the Paddlet platform. This easy-to-use, global tool allows individuals from around the world to share their powerful messages, stories, and insights to help draw attention to the realities of childhood cancer.
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect time for our community to come together. The Virtual Awareness Wall provides a space where healthcare professionals, patients, survivors, parents, and other stakeholders can come together to contribute and interact, wherever they are.
By participating, you will help raise awareness of the realities of childhood cancer. The Wall will serve as a lasting legacy of awareness and inspiration, where your stories and messages can continue to make a difference over time.
