Unveiling the SIOPE Childhood Cancer Profiles

04/07/2024

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dear Childhood Cancer Community Members,
We are excited to announce with you the latest milestone from the OCEAN (Organisation of Care & rEsearch for children with cANcer in Europe) project: the Childhood Cancer Country Profiles.

These profiles provide a comprehensive overview of the organisation of care and research in 38 countries, including all 27 EU member states and 11 additional SIOP Europe and CCI Europe countries. The profiles highlight critical disparities and fundamental inequalities among countries in terms of epidemiological data, availability of care, treatment options, and clinical trials. Each country profile is divided into three main sections: Epidemiology, Organisation of Care, and Research.

The personalized Childhood Cancer Country Profiles were unveiled at the OCEAN Plenary Session during the SIOP Europe Annual Meeting 2024 in Milan. The session received significant attention and was even covered by the prestigious eClinicalMedicine journal, part of The Lancet.

“The plenary session on the disparities in childhood and adolescent cancer care and research across Europe, with a focus on the OCEAN project, shed light on the disparities that exist in cancer treatment and research for young patients across different European countries” said Vincenzo Giacco, Senior Editor at eClinicalMedicine, part of The Lancet. “The session, introduced by Professor Gilles Vassal from Gustave Roussy Comprehensive Cancer Center in Paris, France, set the stage for an in-depth discussion on the critical issues surrounding pediatric cancer care disparities across the continent.”
