SIOP Europe’s Policy Team Meet Newly Elected MEPs during Strasbourg Plenary

Working with EU policy makers to ensure the best possible care and outcome for all children and young people with cancer

Brussels, Belgium – Building on our sustained efforts to advocate for the voice of paediatric oncology at the European level, the SIOP Europe Policy Team attended the opening plenary session of the European Parliament. To raise awareness about childhood cancer and support research and care efforts across Europe, a photo campaign and several meetings with newly elected Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) were held, further amplifying the voice of the paediatric oncology community. We thank all who met with us; their support is crucial in advocating for the necessary EU policies to cure more, cure better, and tackle inequalities in childhood cancer.

As the new mandate begins, there are exciting developments underway aimed at improving the lives of children with cancer. MEP Vlad Voiculescu (RO, Renew Group), a former Minister for Health and longtime cancer patient advocate, intends to lead the establishment of an Intergroup on Cancer. This Intergroup will prioritize childhood cancer and bring together members from all political groups, serving as a platform to explore avenues to strengthen the EU’s capabilities in addressing cancer. This will be achieved by engaging with stakeholders including patient advocates, cancer survivors and carers, scientific and medical societies, research institutions, think tanks, medical practitioners and researchers, policymakers, leaders of the health industry, civil society, and national governments and institutions.

SIOP Europe looks forward to working with MEP Voiculescu on this important initiative, alongside our various Champions within the European Parliament. Together, we will strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of countless children, their families, and survivors across Europe affected by cancer.
