President's Letter

02/05/2023

Dear colleagues, members and partners,

Since our last newsletter edition earlier this year, we are pleased to share that the European childhood cancer community and the SIOP Europe office have been involved in a broad range of activities dedicated to promoting progress in the field of paediatric oncology – notably, past, ongoing, and upcoming events, as you will discover as you read on.

We take this opportunity to kindly remind you once more to submit your papers to SIOP Europe’s official journal - the European Journal of Cancer Paediatric Oncology (EJCPO): https://siope.eu/news/ejc-po-submit-your-paper/. Submissions are free of charge until 31 July 2023, so do not miss this opportunity to share your research with the community.

We are pleased to share with you the latest updates from SIOP Europe.

We hope you enjoy reading us.

4th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Oncology

The SIOP Europe 4th Annual Meeting is just around the corner, and we are grateful to once again have the opportunity to organise this event in partnership with CCI Europe, as well as to be able to host it once more in person since the pandemic, in the beautiful city of Valencia, Spain from 8 to 12 May 2023.

We are grateful for the remarkable programme that has been put together – more than 150 meetings and sessions entirely dedicated to childhood cancer will he held. But that’s not all. There will be numerous networking events, presentations of projects, charity activities, and more – not one single second will be lost during that week to advance the needs of people affected by childhood cancer and to unite the community.

If you have not registered, it is not too late!

Updates on Working Groups

We are also thankful to SIOP Europe Working Groups (WGs) for their vast contributions to the Annual Meeting programme – if you plan to attend the event, make sure to check out those sessions to find out more about how WGs contribute to unmet needs of childhood cancer patients, survivors, and their caretakers.

Updates on Educational Activities

In addition to the comprehensive scientific programme of the 4th SIOP Europe Annual Meeting, the SIOP Europe Educational Steering Committee has put together an exciting educational programme.

As always, there are also many upcoming webinars and educational opportunities that are listed in this newsletter edition.

To name a couple of them, Module 2 of the SIOP Europe Course in Paediatric Oncology will take place 7-10 June in Ljubljana, Slovenia and the next ESO-SIOPE Masterclass in Paediatric Oncology will be held on 9-12 November 2023 (Hybrid) in Milan, Italy.

Onco-Policy News

The SIOP Europe Policy team have been very active these past months, celebrating International Childhood Cancer Day (15 February), contributing to the Revision of the EU Pharmaceutical Legislation to ensure that childhood cancer remains high on the political agenda, and are currently planning the next SIOPE-MAC event during Gold September.

Updates from Projects

The ACCELERATE platform has achieved a lot these past months: the 11th Paediatric Strategy Forum for Medicinal Product Development of PI3K/AKT/mTOR Pathway Inhibitors took place in Boston, Massachusetts on 3-4 April 2023 and the ALADDIN portal was launched at the end of March 2023.

The Projects team has a lot of interesting news to share in this newsletter edition. In March, the smartCARE project kick-off meeting took place to discuss next steps for this exciting new EU-funded project that will develop a smartCard for cancer patients and survivors to facilitate data transfer and improve quality of life.

Read on to discover all the other project-related activities that have happened this year.

As you can see, there are numerous ongoing activities to help us achieve our mission to increase cure rates and improve health outcomes for children and adolescents with cancer. Continue reading to find out more!

As always, we hope you will enjoy reading the latest updates from SIOP Europe.

We hope to see many of you next week in Valencia!
