Let’s talk about hope.
Such a short word, yet such a powerful one. It is the force that motivates us to create, change, persevere and keep going on. And when it comes to families facing childhood cancer, hope has its own important role throughout the cancer pathway.
But what happens when a child is diagnosed with an incurable cancer? Is there still room for hope? And what really is hope? Is it the same for all of us? Do we all hope for the same things? Could it be that hope is something much more complex? Could it be that hope transforms, taking new forms and shapes, depending on our circumstances? Is it possible that families still have hope, even when they are fully aware that the child is going to die? And how important is open communication to empower hope, but without risking fostering false hope?
To spark the discussion, the SIOPE Paediatric Palliative Care Working Group would like to draw your attention to the joint session with the SIOPE Psychosocial Working Group and CCI-E at the upcoming SIOP Europe Annual Meeting 2024 in Milano. During the session, healthcare professionals and patient representatives will exchange ideas and inspiring input on this important topic. We would be delighted to welcome a large number of participants and get the conversation going!
Additionally, the SIOPE Palliative Care Working Group participated in the World Health Worker Week campaign that took place from 7-13 of April 2024. SIOPE co-organized this campaign with ACCELERATE, by showcasing the remarkable work of SIOPE’s and ACCELERATE’s Working Groups and Clinical Trial Groups, all in light of #WorldHealthWorkerWeek. Read more about the campaign here or follow us on social media using the hashtag #SIOPExACCELERATE.
