SIOPE Europe Nursing Working Group: Past, Present, and Future

Let's start with the "past"…

Over the past two years, our Working Group has made significant advances in achieving our goals. We've successfully consolidated our group, and our recent 2-day Nursing Programme at the 4th SIOPE Annual Meeting in Valencia showcased our progress. With over 60 registered nurses and renowned speakers like Faith Gibson and Johan de Munter, it was a great success. The presentation deck will be available to the SIOPE Nursing working group members!

In addition to our participation in larger SIOPE projects like Polaris, we contributed to the ESCALIER project by revising and updating the Standards of Care for Children with Cancer, specifically Chapter 8:  Educational and training priorities in Paediatric Oncology. We emphasized the importance of specialized education and training for nurses in paediatric hemato-oncology. We also highlighted nurse rotation as a significant challenge, hindering competence and expertise development in paediatric oncology nursing. The latter leads to knowledge loss and retention issues, particularly during the ongoing nursing shortage crisis. Specialized knowledge is crucial for administering chemotherapy, managing side effects, handling emergencies, and educating patients and families. This training is essential for providing safe and high-quality care to children and adolescents with cancer.

At present, our sub-working groups are thriving! Palliative Care (PC) has launched a survey to assess the training of European nurses in PC, while Nutrition and Research sub-groups are actively engaged in their respective areas. We are still looking for respondents for our survey, which is open to all nurses who work in paediatric cancer, haematology, oncology or palliative care in the hospital setting or the community. The aim of the survey is to explore cancer nurses’ education and training in paediatric palliative care (PPC) and to identify potential educational needs, which will influence other project work streams to address any gaps.
